Breaking News!!! Minister Reiterates Ban On Post UTME

Nigeria’s Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu has reiterated that the ban on Post Unified Tertiary matriculation Examination is with immediate effect, and under no circumstance should any institution violate the directive.

Post Unified Tertiary matriculation Examination, otherwise known as Post-UTME is conducted by Tertiary Institutions for admission into Universities and other higher institutions of learning in Nigeria.
While giving the directive on Monday in Abuja, the Minister explained that although he had made the issue known earlier, but emphasis has become necessary in order to ensure that no stakeholder is left in doubt as to government position on the Post UTME matter.

He said the responsibility for admission into public tertiary institutions lies solely with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and under no circumstance should any institution take over the responsibility by proxy.

“For the avoidance of doubt, any educational institution after secondary education is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore all tertiary institutions, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Universities or by whatever name it is called after secondary education must be subjected to admission through the JAMB. At the end of probationary admission by JAMB, the candidates can be cleared (screened) for final admission. For any institution with a shortfall in admission, such institution can revert to JAMB for supplementary admission. Clearing in this case (screening) entails only the verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists. After this, the candidates are qualified for matriculation. Such screening should be at no cost to the parents or students and should be done upon resumption in order to avoid unnecessary travels in search of admission,” the Minister explained.

Malam Adamu decried the situation where final year students in Nigeria secondary schools are subjected to too many examinations all in one year, describing it as traumatic, exploitative and absolutely unnecessary.

According to Adamu, mere admission into the University does not guarantee any student the award of a degree until such a student successfully goes through a minimum of eight examinations (for 4-year courses) or ten and twelve examinations (for 5 and 6 year courses), among other requirements.

The Minister expressed worry over reasons why any university would not be satisfied with examining a student for eight, ten or twelve times for the award of a degree, but would rather sort to conducting entry examinations.

He said Universities are at liberty to expel any student who fails to meet up with the requirements of the award of any degree enrolled for.

The Minister also stated that there has been no empirical evidence to show that since the inception of Post-UTME, Universities have been having better quality students, but that students are still being expelled on a yearly basis for low performance even as they gained admission through Post-UTME.

Plight of parents/Guardians
Furthermore, Malam Adamu said he is deeply concerned about the plight of parents/guardians who spend fortunes on transportation, hotel accommodation, examination fees and sundry costs, just for their wards to gain admission into Universities, that such practice negates the Buhari Administration’s resolve to make education affordable for Nigerians.

The Minister said he is also mindful of reported cases where some staff of tertiary institutions take undue advantage of the girl-child in her quest to gain admission into the system.

He acknowledged some cases where parents die in the process of travelling to secure admission for their wards, and never live to see those children through, a situation he described as painful and avoidable.

The Minister has however directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) and appropriate departments in the Ministry to communicate the directive to relevant agencies and institutions to ensure strict compliance.

Malam Adamu warned higher institutions that have already advertised for the conduct of the Post-UTME under any guise to stop the exercise immediately as any university caught conducting Post-UTMNE will face appropriate sanctions.

“if any tertiary Institution has already conducted Post-UTME, such an exercise stands annulled and money taken from such candidates must be refunded immediately,” the Minister added.

7. Avoid going for a plural domain name
Buying a plural domain name which singular is already existing is very risky.
Adding s to the back of your domain name is very risky.

Everyone blames an applicant for not making the most of the opportunity he or she has when in front of an interviewer. Sadly, no one has deemed it fit to beam the searchlight on the interviewer—some Nigerian HR persons can be damn rude sometimes. Most HR persons like playing “god”—can’t blame though, the economy is in a terrible shape. It is a world where an applicant is always at the mercy of the employer. Keeps you waiting without a word of apology
The letter asking you to attend an interview or chat states that the interview is for 9 am in the morning—and you are there before the set time. However, some HR person playing “god” walks into the venue by 10 am without a word of apology and acts like you are a-nobody. I mean this is typical of most Nigerian employers.

Talks down on you
Some HR persons would talk down on you and treat you like you are a nobody. It had to be said that no responsible company employs interviewers that treat candidates badly.

Acts like he was not once an applicant
It is so disheartening that some HR persons act like they were not once in your shoes (na your papa get the company?). They not only talk down on you, but expect you to act like a superhuman who has answers to everything about the company.

Cuts you off when you are speaking?
Lousy HRs don’t know a jack about manners—and that’s why they treat applicants like they are beneath them in status. They ask a question, and before you could finish offering an explanation—they cut you off without offering any form of apology.

FUTA Three’ killed on the ‘eve of graduation’

To conclude that the death of three final year and a 300- level students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, Ondo State in an auto crash was sad and painful is an understatement.

No word is too big to describe the agony of the parents and family members of the students who had gone far in their education.

The parents have however taken solace in the Christianity admonition: “ In all things we should give thanks”.

It was crying and wailing penultimate Saturday when the news of the death of the students filtered into campus.

The tension in the university was so high that everyone wore a long face. The atmosphere was sombre and a visitor to the institution would easily decipher that something tragic had happened.

Students gathered in groups to pray and cry in the open field and lecture theatres while lecturers and other university workers discussed the ugly incident in hush voices. Traffic inside the university was thin.

For three days,the university community mourned the four students whose lives were cut short in the auto crash.

Lectures were suspended.

That Saturday was indeed a black day in FUTA as lecturers and students cried and wailed openly.

The 500-level students who died in the crash include Olaleye Israel Olumide -mathematics and statistics, Owadayo Funke-microbiology, Abolarinwa Olaniyi-electrical and electronics engineering while Oke Oluwatosin was a 300-level student of electrical and electronics engineering.

A source hinted Sunday Vanguard that the students, under the umbrella of the Campus Christian Outreach Programme, were returning from a mission conference tagged, “PAROUSIA” in Ibadan, Oyo State when the unfortunate incident happened.

Fifteen students went for the conference in the FUTA campus fellowship bus. Thirteen of them are students of the university and members of different campus fellowships while the Coordinator of PAROUSIA for Akure Zone and another student of the University of Benin, Edo State accompanied the bus on the religious journey which claimed the lives of four of them and left 11 others maimed with serious injuries.

It was gathered that one of the students was driving the bus when the accident happened few kilometers back to FUTA. The crash, according to eyewitness account, occurred along the Ilesha-Akure Expressway. Report had it that the bus conveying the students, on getting to Ibulesoro town in Ifedore council area of the state, skidded off the expressway after a motorcyclist recklessly crossed the road.

The driver , who was trying to maneuver the bus in order not to crush the motorcyclist, lost control and crashed.

The bus reportedly somersaulted several times before it finally stopped.

The four deceased students, it was learnt, died on the spot while 11 survivors were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

They were admitted at Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure where they were rushed to by sympathizers.

The FUTA Students Union President Segun Oladele told Sunday Vanguard that the parents of the deceased students had been informed and already claimed the corpses.

Oladele added that some of those injured had been discharged from hospital.

A three-day of mourning according to him had been declared in the university which will be lecture free.

He noted that a candle night processing was equally held in FUTA in honor of the departed souls .

Ondo State Police Command spokesman, Femi Joseph, said officers from the command and those of the Federal Road Safety Commission responded swiftly to the accident and rushed those injured to hospital.

Officials of the FRSC in the state attributed the accident to over-speeding and loss of concentration on the part of the students vehicle involved.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, said the students were on a private religious trip when the accident happened.

Adegbenro noted that the management of FUTA was doing all it could to give those in the hospital the best treatment. He confirmed that the parents of those who died in the crash have since claimed their corpses

He commiserated with the families of the deceased students and their colleagues.

FRSC marshals have made a habit of preying on innocent road users’ especially female drivers and claiming that the tyre(s) of their vehicles are expired. FRSC Marshals claim that tyres expire after 4 years from Date of Manufacture (DOM).
Question: How true is that?
Answer: Completely false (my opinion)

First let’s start with what those numbers on your tyre means:

The chronological age of any tire can be found on the tire sidewall by examining the characters following the symbol "DOT". The last four numbers identify the date of manufacture of the tire to the nearest week. The first two of these four numbers identify the week of manufacture (which range from "01" to "53"). The last two numbers identify the year of manufacture (e.g., a tire with the information "DOT XXXXXXX2714” was manufactured in the 27th week of 2014)

Accordig to Michelin, after five years or more in service, your tyres should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year. If the need arises, follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer regarding replacing the original equipment tyres. As a precaution, if the tyres have not been replaced 10 years from their date of manufacture (see how to read a tyre sidewall), Michelin recommends replacing them with new tyres. Even if they appear to be in usable condition and have not worn down to the tread wear indicator.
The truth is that a tyre never really expires, it all depends on the wear and tear of the tyre that makes it either useable or to be changed.

By FRSC standard a tyre that is completely worn out but with a DOM less than 4 years is safe to use while a tyre that is not worn out at all due to low millage is unsafe (Sounds ridiculous).

We intend to engage FRSC Corps Marshal so as to call his men to order and that they should rather check the wear of a tyre rather concentrate on so called expiring date of a tyre.

Geneva – The WHO has advised all male survivors of Ebola to be tested three months after the onset of symptoms and then monthly until they know they have no risk of passing on the virus through their semen.
Bruce Aylward, Head of the WHO’s Ebola Response, said on Thursday in Geneva that isolated flare-ups of Ebola may point to a higher risk of transmission via the semen of male survivors than previously thought.
“It’s not the sex that is dangerous; it’s the semen that is dangerous. How people actually get exposed, in soiled linens or whatever, is not clear.
“Transmission through semen may explain why a few cases continue to occur even though the outbreak has been almost completely eradicated by an intense international effort, recently bolstered by the deployment of a trial vaccine in Guinea and Sierra Leone,’’ he said.
Aylward said the latest flare-up, in a village on the northern border of Sierra Leone, followed the death of a 67-year-old woman late last month, 50 days after the previous confirmed case in the region.
He said transmission chains are considered to have been broken after 42 days with no new infections.
However, Aylward said that sexual transmission was “obviously not a huge risk, because if it were we would have seen a lot more in the areas that were hardest hit at the beginning of this outbreak.”
He said this could undermine the hope of ending the outbreak in West Africa by 2015.
A clinician said on condition of anonymity, that a forthcoming study in the New England Journal of Medicine, based on around 200 survivors, found that around half still had traces of the virus in their semen after six months.
“The old advice of three months is no longer good.
“The number of people with persistent virus in their semen is much greater than expected,” clinician said.
