Man who can't use his legs caught driving car with walking stick

A man who has no use of his legs was caught driving with a walking
stick this morning, by using it to push the brake and accelerator.
The 32-year-old Manurewa man was driving a regular car, which he has
owned for some time. He also had two passengers in the car but neither
was licensed to drive.
The man has a condition on his license that he can only operate a
vehicle with hand-held controls, and has held a learner licence since
2002.
He was caught by an Automatic Number Plate Recognition checkpoint,
which flagged his vehicle from a prior unrelated offence.
"Needless to say this was a very surprising thing to come across and
we are shocked at his blatant disregard for his own safety and the
safety of other road users," said Sergeant Mark Fleming of the
Counties Manukau road policing unit.
The man has been charged with dangerous driving and will appear in the
Manukau District Court.
